Gorgeous mid-century modern Blenko design #5710 by Wayne Husted in Tangerine. This hard to find design was only produced for 3 years, from 1957 to 1959. Check out Wayne Husted's blog where he discusses how adding selenium to cadmium and sulfur (the latter two which are needed to create yellow) produces "a straw yellow hue" until the glass is reheated. From there, the bright bold RED/ORANGE exemplified dramatically in this explosively vibrant pitcher is born. (According to oft-repeated "Blenko lore", it is THIS full-out 100% orange that Husted originally envisioned for Blenko's Tangerine--there's not even any yellow in the handle.)
Wayne Husted created over 600 unique designs while at Blenko, many of which are included in museum collections and sought after by private collectors nationwide. Think of mid-century modern glass design, and you picture Wayne’s distinctly sculptural designs. Wayne is still designing beautiful glassware at the age of 91.
